With hardwood floors through my entire house my Swiffer mop is a must. But #1 -I am a mom who is trying to cut out as many chemical cleaners as I can and replace them with essential oils, and #2 as a thrifty mom I hate paying the price for refills- so the solution is to make my own. Have you thought about trying the same thing yourself? This tutorial gives you a simple method for the solution and reusable wipes that can be tossed right into the washer when done, then air dried. They are sturdy, long lasting, and you can make half a dozen pads and a quart of solution for less than the price of 1 refill package. Of course you are also being green and kind to the planet. Why NOT make these?
Flannel (any color)
To make your own reusable pads- For each pad you want cut 2 flannel pieces into 10 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. Place the pieces back to back, fold over 1/4″ and sew seam, continue all around 4 sides.
Trim off stray threads, fold your pad to fit your container to store.
Giving it a double thickness makes it sturdier, and also able to absorb and pick up more. I use up 2 pads when mopping up the whole house, I made 4 to keep in the tub so I can have half in use and half in the washer. To extend their life I recommend air drying or place it right back into the tub of solution from the washer.
To make the solution pick your favorite citrus essential oil (s), which are excellent For the last couple batches I have been using doTERRA's Wild Orange and Basil, and of course I add in some On Guard Protective blend – It is an excellent surface cleaner, and studies have shown that it eliminates and controls pathogens. You can store your solution in anything but if you keep the container from your last Swiffer refill it works perfectly with this mixture and the homemade pads.
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
choice of citrus essential oils and On Gaurd
Both the solution and pads are inexpensive to make and I have found they work even better than the store bought versions. If you give this DIY a try let us know what you think!
