YWAM Publishing offered us several choices from their Heroes of History series of books and we chose to review Heroes of History: Abraham Lincoln: A New Birth of Freedom. Abraham Lincoln represents birth and freedom and I was excited to teach Mini about it. Being able to teach Mini in a way that makes it easy for her to understand is what I'm always looking for in any homeschool product I use. You have heard me share about Heroes of History before with our Laura Ingalls Review. I was curious to see if this book History Unit Study would be as good and it really is. Abraham Lincoln did a lot for our country and showing Mini why was really important to me. I wanted her to get why he was a Hero of History.
The interesting part of Abraham Lincoln is that he never wanted to be president. Yet, he led the country through the Civil War. He fought hard for something he believed. Heroes of History presents biographies of important people in USA history and Abraham Lincoln fits that description.
There are 224 pages in this book. It's broken down into 19 Chapters. You can purchase a physical book, an eBook, you can even get it on audio. That's what works best for Mini. If we are using a physical book I end up reading most of it to her. There is also a study guide that goes along with the book.
The Study Guide
The Study Guide is broken down into several sections. The first section called Key Quotes and can be used for copy work. The second section is called Display Corner. It's great for your hands on learners. They can gather things like maps of the area that Abraham Lincoln is from or pennies. The third section is 4 essay questions for each chapter. The fourth section is Student Explorations. It has Essay Questions, Creative Writting suggestions, Hands on Projects, and Audio/Visual Projects. The fifth section is Community Links. It's researching and preparing for a field trip to places that might pertain to the time period you are studying. Section six is Social Studies. It's divided into six categories, each with suggestions on how to use the material
given. It's a robust section with many suggestions that will get any Student interested. Section seven is Related Themes to Explore. It gives you ideas on how to expand the Unit study Math, Geography, and more.
How We Used it
I read most of the book to Mini. We used the Study Guide along with it. Being able to pick and choose what works for us was awesome. There's so much to the Study Guide that I didn't feel like it was a waste of time. I was able to tailor it to Mini's style of learning. That always makes us happy.
Whether you homeschool or are just looking for something that will teach you about Abe Lincoln’s life, this is the book for you. Heroes in History also has many other biographies that are well worth the read and will make great history unit study. There’s no doubt in my mind that you’re going to love learning about Honest Abe!
