I love the convenience and the yummy flavors that you get in prepackage oatmeal. What I don't love is the sodium, extra sugar, and who knows how many preservatives are in each packet. They can get pretty pricey if you are eating them often as well so I prefer to make my own. The other benefit to making your own is that you can create custom flavors with high-quality real ingredients. I put together 3 comforting fall flavor combinations for these Homemade Oatmeal Packets. Store bought may get you strawberry or an apple cinnamon but you won't find amazing flavors like Cranberry Almond, Pumpkin Mocha Latte, or Banana Nut Bread in those little sealed pouches! This version is also dairy free and gluten free (make sure you get gluten free certified oatmeal)
Homemade Oatmeal Packets-3 Fall Flavors
For 12 Packets
4 cups oatmeal
1/2- 3/4 cups brown sugar
Process one and half cups in a blender, processor, or coffee grinder until it is a coarse powder.
Combine brown sugar, whole oats, and the oat powder you just made until well mixed.
Scoop 1/3 cup of oatmeal base into plastic sandwich bag. Now you can add your additional ingredients.
Here are three great comforting fall flavors to get you started….
Add 2 tsp. almonds and 2 tsp. of cranberries.
Pumpkin Mocha Latte
Add 2 tsp. instant coffee granules, 1 tsp. baking cocoa, 1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice.
Banana Nut Bread
1 T. banana chips, 2 tsp. crushed walnuts, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon.
Don't forget to label your flavors with a permanent marker.
These quick and simple homemade oatmeal packets make chilly mornings easier and tastier.
To make instant oatmeal in your Keurig or other single cup brewer:
Pour oatmeal into a mug or bowl that fits in machine, dispense 6 oz. of water, stir and allow to sit for 2 minutes until liquid is absorbed.
Add a little milk if desired.
